Local 1231 Members took part in a powerful Canadian Political Action Symposium 2026 held at the William Winipisinger Center in Hollywood, Maryland. The theme focused on Building Solidarity in Polarizing Times. The training highlighted how political action starts with conversations, building consensus, and creating change through municipal, provincial, and federal laws that improve lives for all Canadians.

Canadian GVP Dave Chartrand addressed Canada’s complex political climate with honesty and strategy, while the International President Brian Bryant reaffirmed strong support for Canadian interests, opposition to tariffs, and respect for Canadian sovereignty. He also thanked members for all they do and said he was proud to be part of the IAM family.

The event was a strong reminder that solidarity, education, and action remain the foundation of our movement.

A special thanks to International Representative Derek Ferguson, for his leadership, and organizing this landmark event.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success.

A short report from the Chair of our PAC Committee Nahiyan Siddique :

I attended the PAC Symposium held on April 8–10 at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center alongside a delegation of eight members led by Madam President Merry St. Bernard representing Local Lodge 1231, District 78.

The symposium was a great success, highlighting the strong connection between unions and politics in advancing workers’ rights and benefits. Key discussions emphasized why political engagement matters to union members, how misinformation can impact union solidarity, and the importance of supporting political parties aligned with workers’ interests while remaining prepared to shift advocacy if commitments are not upheld. We were proud to have leaders and speakers including Canadian General VicePresident Dave Chartrand, Chief of Staff Ralph Martin, International President Brian Bryant and representatives from the Canadian Labour Congress, Brent Farrington and Amandeep Nijjar, who helped facilitate workshops and shared valuable insights. The symposium also provided valuable training on political action, member engagement and legislative advocacy, with sessions focused on grassroots mobilization, effective communication with elected officials and increasing participation in PAC initiatives. A special thanks to International Representative Derek Ferguson for organizing this important event and bringing everyone together. Overall, the experience strengthened our commitment to effective political action and member engagement within our union.
