
THE HISTORY OF LOCAL 1231
IAM Local 1231 is a Canadian labor union representing healthcare workers, primarily Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) and allied health professionals in the Greater Toronto Area. The local was chartered in August 2018 and quickly became one of the largest organizing victories in Canada in recent decades for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
KEY DATES AND BACKGROUND
• April 2018: Successful organizing campaign
The IAM successfully organized over 2,400 healthcare workers at Spectrum Health Care, which was considered the largest organizing victory in Canada in decades. Some of the workers, who provide in-home healthcare, had previously worked for another company called Preferred Health Care Services
• August 2018: Charter granted


The new local lodge, 1231, received its official charter from the IAM. The ceremony, held at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, was attended by a group of the local’s first executive officers and stewards.
• October 2018: First contract ratified
After receiving their charter, the members of Local 1231 ratified their first collective bargaining agreement with Spectrum Health Care.
• January 2019: First general meeting


The local held its inaugural general meeting in Mississauga, Ontario, bringing together members and their newly elected interim leadership for the first time.

• 2021: Pension bonus negotiated
The union worked with the employer to secure a bonus payment for members, particularly recognizing their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The payment was directed to the members’ IAM Pension Plan.
• 2023: 2nd Contract ratified
• Affiliation with IAM District 78
Local 1231 is affiliated with IAM District 78, which supports IAM locals across Ontario and was chartered by the IAM in 1953.

Local 1231 is known for its strong focus on community and advocating for the rights of healthcare workers.
Notable activities include: helping refugees, creating community.

• Community involvement: In August 2023, the local’s Women’s Committee helped refugees by donating personal care items to the Beautiful Foundation.
• Human rights advocacy: The local actively participates in union initiatives like the IAM’s “Breaking Barriers” Human Rights Conference to advocate for equality in the workplace.
