Local Lodge 1231 brothers and sisters, showed up in SOLIDARITY at the emergency rally at Queens Park, in support of the Ontario Education Workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
This was in response to the ‘Keep Children in School Act’, preventing a planned strike by Ontario Education Workers represented by CUPE.
In a historic win for Unions, Bill 28 was repealed and the Ontario Education Workers got their demands met and a fair deal.
In an attempt to show our appreciation of the hard work of our brothers and sisters of Local Lodge 1231, District 78, working at Spectrum, we are introducing the MEMBER OF THE MONTH.
If you know of an individual working at Spectrum who is worthy of recognition for their outstanding work or abilities, please message me, Sabiha Khan, (Communicator for LL1231) at skhan@iamaw1231.ca with your entry. Please include the individuals full name, phone number or email and the reason why you think they should be showcased.
Entries should be sent in by the 20th of each month. The process of selection will be fair and impartial through drawing of lots. Those employees who have not been selected for the present month will be entered into a draw for the following month.

The 40th Grand lodge Convention held in Las Vegas was a huge success, the delegates passed resolutions and made changes to the constitution to set the course for the future.
There were approximately 153 Canadian delegates who participated, out of 1,053 delegates
A resolution was passed to form a committee on the future, this committee will evaluate where we are today and make recommendations for our future.
International President Robert Martinez Jr’s opening speech at the 40th Grand Lodge Convention in Las Vegas, aroused great enthusiasm and vigour amongst first time delegates of Local Lodge 1231, District 78. As one of the delegates said, “it was a transformative and groundbreaking educational and growth experience.”
The tireless work of the host committee members and the Western Territories members was commendable.
The President of the United States joined the 2022 Grand Lodge Convention via video. He expressed his sincere gratitude for IAM members and their pivotal role in the U.S economy.
U.S Secretary of Labor was effusive in his praise of the IAM and their critical role in advancing worker rights. He reminded members of President Joe Biden’s policies which have directly been responsible for improving the lives of working Americans and union members.
For the first time delegates to the IAM 40th Grand Lodge Convention held in Las Vegas, it was an unforgettable experience. As Secretary-Treasurer of Local Lodge 1231, Liza Thambaiah articulated, “we have learned so much and are excited to take this knowledge back to our members.”
The Local Lodge 1231 delegates would like to thank its members, Business Representative Ralph Martin, District 78, organizers, executive board of the IAMAW and all those who made their presence at the 40th Grand Lodge Convention a possibility. They have come back “fired and wired” to share their knowledge with their union family. Together we will improve the lives of our members.

LL1231 Social committee regrettably cancels the Appreciation BBQ scheduled for September 17th 2022 due to matters beyond our control.
The committee is exploring options to reschedule and are working to provide you with more information soon.

LOCAL LODGE EXECUTIVE ELECTIONS
The IAMAW constitution and your Local Lodge bylaws mandate that the Local Lodge holds nominations and elections for the Executive officers of the Local Lodge.
As per the Local Lodge bylaws there will be nominations for the following positions at the November 17th regular meeting being held at 557 Dixon Rd, unit 102 starting at 7:00 p.m.
President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary, Conductor Sentinel, and 3 Trustees.
Please note the Local lodge bylaws state, in order to qualify for any position on the Executive you must have attended at least 50% of the regular monthly meetings in the 12 month period up to the date of nominations.
If more than one individual is nominated for any position elections will be held at the regular monthly meeting in December

Labour Day and Unions in Canada
Labour day is considered a federal statutory holiday. The holiday celebrates workers and the labour union movement. Labour Day parades and picnics are often organized by unions. On that note, Local Lodge 1231 will be hosting their first Annual BBQ on Saturday, September 17th, 2022
The first Monday in September has been an official holiday in Canada since 1894, and in the United States since 1892. But the origin of Labour Day came 20 years before that, when unions started holding parades and rallies in Toronto and Ottawa to celebrate the successful 1872 Toronto printers’ strike – the original “fight for fairness” that won major changes including the decriminalization of unions in Canada.
Today, Labour Day marks the unofficial end to summer and the start of a new school year for children in Canada and the United States. It is a day of rest and, for unions and labour activists, a day to celebrate the accomplishments of the labour movement and the benefits of having a union at work.
But, as is the case with most holidays, the origins of Labour Day come from the struggles of working people and the demand for fairness. In this case, it was the movement to establish a nine-hour work day (the standard was a 12-hour work day and a six-day work week) and a strike by printers in Toronto in the spring of 1872 got that special day for all workers!!
