The art of effective communication, was taught at the Basic Communications Program at the William Winipisinger Education and Technology Center (W3), Hollywood, Maryland, from October 5-11 2024. Communicators from all over North America, convened here, to learn from erudite and experienced faculty members like Ron Olson, John Carre, Bill Haller and J Woodward to name some of the few. The topics ranged from Writing Skills, Graphic and Video/Photo Workshops, Organizing and Communications and The Law and keeping you out of Trouble.
“Exploring the fundamentals of Communication, I learned to craft clear messages and create eye-catching posts, photos and videos, for our website and social media accounts. This was done through discussions, exercises and projects. It helped me to become a more proficient communicator and do my job more effectively. Besides, there was also the added bonus of networking and forming personal and professional relationships with faculty and fellow communicators from across the Country,” said Sabiha Khan, Communicator for LL1231, when asked to describe her experience at the W3.
Communication is crucial for a union for several reasons. Key amongst these are the Internal benefits, which include keeping the Membership informed of union activities, goals and progress, engagement and participation and most importantly creating an atmosphere of transparency, unity and solidarity. This is turn fosters a sense of shared purpose and collective trust. It can also be used as a tool for education and training purposes, to spread knowledge regarding Labor rights, Policies and Procedures.
