Each year, Union Plus awards scholarships to union members or members of their families for post-secondary education through the Union Plus Scholarship Program by the Union Plus Education Foundation.
This year, Union Plus has awarded 209 union members and family members with $200,000 in scholarships, ranging from $500 to $4,000, based on applicants’ academic achievement and union values.
Two members of the IAM are among this year’s recipients, all of whom are university, college, and trade or technical school students from 33 states, the District of Columbia, and one Canadian Province.
Breigh Gayler of Alvord, Texas, whose father, Jason Gayler, is a member of IAM Local 776A, has been awarded a $1,050 scholarship.
Sophia Lee Harris of Louisville, Ky., who is a member of IAM Local 201, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship.
The IAM congratulates both recipients on their hard-earned scholarships and wishes the two scholars good luck in their higher education.
Applicants for the Union Plus Scholarship Program must demonstrate academic ability and submit essays describing their career goals, detailing their relationship with the labor movement, and explaining why they are deserving of a union scholarship.
The program is open to union members, their spouses and dependent children of unions that participate in any Union Plus program.
Individuals must be accepted into an accredited college or university, community college, or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award is issued.
Union members and family members can apply without a product purchase or participation in any Union Plus program.
The 2025 application will be available in mid-June 2024.
